SURVIVING SEVERE WINTER STORMS

SANTA FE, NM - Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Management officials have issued guidelines for surviving severe winter storms with an emphasis on procedures in rural and isolated areas of the state:

1. Right now while there is a break between storms, stock up on food, water, fuel or wood, any medications you may need for medical conditions and food and water for livestock and domestic animals.

2. If you are snowed in and need help, make an SOS in the snow that can be seen from the air.

3. Have a portable radio and extra batteries for Weather Reports. There are windup radios available that don’t need batteries.

4. Clear roof gutters and drains, then remove accumulated snow from rooftops. When clearing snow and ice from your roof, start at the edges and move inward.

5. Clear walkways and driveways.

6. Reach out to neighbors and check on their well being, especially the elderly and those with special needs.

7. When the snow melts, be cautious driving through low lying areas and arroyos. Six inches of running water can sweep a car or truck away. Avoid muddy areas if possible, and don’t travel alone.

8. Make a list of emergency contacts and keep in a prominent place.

9. List your medications and keep in a prominent place.
