A new exhibit called “Eyes on Earth” is on display at the Western Heritage Museum on the NMJC campus in Hobbs now through May 1. This is a highly interactive science exhibition focusing on the “Earth Observing System”, or EOS. It looks at how satellite observations are made and what we can learn about the earth using space technology. Museum hours are Tues.-Sat., 10 a.m. til 5 p.m. and Sunday 1-5 p.m. Admission is $3 for adults, $2 for students and Sr. Citizens, and free for kids 5 and younger. New Mexico Jr. College in Hobbs will host a United Blood Services Blood Drive on Thursday, Feb. 2 from 10 a.m. - 3:30 p.m. on campus. Be a hero and help save lives by giving blood. Be 18 or older and show valid I.D.; walk-in’s are welcome, or go online to set up an appointment at bloodhero-dot-com or call 432-561-5539.

Hobbs Community Theater will hold its Annual Awards Gala on Friday, February 3 at 7 p.m. at the Western Heritage Museum on the NMJC Campus. Light refreshments will be served. It’s free and open to everyone who wants to attend. The playhouse also will vote in a new board of directors at the gala and everyone who attends may vote. Contact 397-0676 for more information.

U.S.S.S.A. Baseball signups for ages 7-15 will be held every Saturday in February from 10 a.m. til 2 p.m. at Broadmoor Mall (and on the 18th and 25th also at Big 5 Sporting Goods). The fee is $50 per player; birth certificate required. There will be no signups after Feb. 28. Contact 942-4163 for more information.
 
A fundraiser for Hobbs Relay for Life Team “Red Hot Kancer Killerz” will be held on Saturday, February 4 at the Nipa Hut, 1105 S. Dal Paso in Hobbs, from 7 a.m. til 1 p.m. There’ll be a special sale of burritos and baked goods; no phone orders or special orders, please. All proceeds to to the American Cancer Society. The A.K.C. all-breed dog shows sponsored by the Hobbs, New Mexico Kennel Club will be held Sat.-Sun., February 4-5 starting at 9 a.m. at the Lea County Event Center in Hobbs. There is no admission fee; all spectators are welcome. However, please leave dogs not entered in competition at home. Look for local girl scouts selling cookies at booths set up at malls and retail stores this weekend and for the next several weeks. There are 8 varieties of cookies. Each box costs $3.50 and the money helps support girl scout programs and troops in the area. (program center, 393-5869)
 
Lovington V.F.W. will hold a dance from 7-9:30 p.m. at The Post, one mile north of Lovington on the Tatum Highway. Cost is $5. There’ll be a live band and potluck refreshments.
 

The family of infant Jesus Emanuel Torres is accepting donations to help fund embryonic stem cell therapy to treat a medical condition resulting from problems at birth. His doctor says the treatment could give Jesus a good chance at living a normal life. Donations are accepted at any Bank of America, account no. 439004730219. The annual “Warm Up Lea County” and “Coats for Kids” drives are underway through United Way’s 2-1-1 service. You can donate a portable heater or apply to receive one at the United Way Office, 320 N. Shipp, Suite B in Hobbs. You can also donate a new or gently used coat or jacket for a boy or girl of any age at the united way office. Applications also are being taken to get coats.
